Two Determined, Resilient BMO Executives Named Among Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women

The remarkable  roster of women recognized in the WXN Top 100 Awards over the years  recently gained two new members from among BMO’s impressive leaders – – Christine M. Cooper, Head, Corporate Finance Division, North American Commercial Banking and Joanna Rotenberg, Group Head, BMO Wealth Management.

Joanna and Christine have much in common. Each has raised their voice, rallied and inspired others both within BMO and in their communities, and continue to pave a path for the next generation.

Conviction that client service should be the key driver for decision-making, and the ability to build effective teams, has served Christine Cooper well throughout her 25-year financial services career. That desire to deeply understand the needs of clients, a willingness to innovate, and strong business acumen have made Christine a trailblazer within BMO, as she held roles of progressive responsibility and leadership in Commercial Banking, Retail Banking, and Risk Management.

With her remarkable track record in delivering success to both clients and the business,  Christine is  a proven leader. Currently, Christine is the Head of Corporate Finance Division for Canada within BMO – the first woman to hold this role, and the individual who carries the most senior level credit granting authority within the enterprise.

Christine’s advocacy for diversity is exemplified by her work as co- founder and executive co-sponsor of Mosaic (BMO’s employee resource group that champions the bank’s development and support of multi-cultural communities), along with the openness and energy she gives to coaching women and men to succeed in the finance industry.

Christine is equally passionate in her contribution to the community outside BMO, including  contributions to World Vision Canada where she is currently on the Board of Directors and serves as Chair of the Audit Committee.  She is also a frequent speaker and fundraiser on behalf of the United Way, the Kids Help Phone, and the Aga Khan Foundation.

Joanna Rotenberg  had an outstanding career as a partner and leader of McKinsey’s Wealth Management practice before joining BMO in 2010 as the Head of Strategy and then as Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Strategy. During her tenure in this role, she was instrumental in facilitating BMO’s largest ever acquisition – Marshall and Ilsley – and spearheaded the revitalization of our brand.  Today, in her role as Group Head, BMO Wealth Management, Joanna continues to make an impact, driving unprecedented levels of collaboration across businesses to help our clients , serving as Executive Sponsor for the BMOforWomen program and being an active member of the Bank’s Executive Committee.

Described as an “innovative business strategist,” and  a “strategic leader”, who is “continuously raising the bar,” Joanna was the youngest group head BMO has ever appointed, and is the most senior woman within the enterprise.

Despite the demands of a thriving career, Joanna still enjoys giving back to the community – particularly in the areas of heath care and education. She’s a member of the Board of Directors of Mount Sinai Hospital, a Board Member for the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and is a member of Ontario’s Panel on Economic Growth and Prosperity, and a member of the Board of Directors for Nesbitt Burns Holdings Corporation.

Equally important to Joanna is being active in the BMO community as an in-demand mentor, and as co-chair of the Kids Help Phone “Walk so Kids Can Talk.” Her passion and engagement spilled over to record results – the highest ever number of walkers and funds raised for the important cause in 2017.

While their roster of collective accomplishments is impressive, it’s their inspiration and empowerment of women within and outside of BMO that personifies the reason they’re both WXN Top 100 Award winners.
